The Survey of IM & EX of China Major Non-ferrous Metal Products in 1997
Under the relatively stable situation of nonferrous metal market
inand outside China in 1997, the trade volume of China's major
nonferrous metal products reached a record of US$ 7.563 billion, out of
which US$ 3.047 billion are of exports and US$ 4. 516 billion are of
imports ,up 47.3 % and 4.6% year-on-year,respectively.
The most obvious characteristic in export and import trade was the
exports increased in a big margin. Except for the value of exports
of lead decreased as compared with that of last year, the value of
exports of other base metals -- copper, aluminium ,zinc increased over
30 % each, including US$783 M value of exports of zinc was 2. 76 times
of that of 1996.
Although domestic demand for nonferrous metals was not strong, the
value of imports of major nonferrous metal products were still
increased . The main reason was that the imports of raw materials
from mine and processed products were keeping increasing. The
imports of mine products imported were US$586 M , the almost same
level as that of 1996, and the imports of processed products were US$
22. 20 billion, up 20% year-on-year.

It is forecasted that after reaching a high level in 1997 the trade
volume of imports and exports of China's major nonferrous metal
products in 1998 will be both decreased with the main reasons as
follows: 1.according to the analysis, the world market prices for
copper , aluminium ,lead ,zinc in 1998 are expected to be obviously
lower than those of 1997.Even if the imports and exports of major
nonferrous metals will be kept at the level of 1997,the trade volume
will still be decreased.Under the situation of price going down ,it is
forecasted that the exports of China's refined copper and zinc ingots
will be greatly decreased , and the exports of lead and aluminium can
only be kept at the level of 1997 . In general, the value of exports
of China's major nonferrous metals are difficult to reach US$ 3 billion
or US$ 2.5 billion which is up to expectation . With the same reason
, the value of imports of China's major nonferrous metals in 1998 are
likely to be US$4 billion.
2.Financial turmoil in East Asia and RMB keeping firm led to the lost
of competitive advantage of price of China's nonferrous metal
products in the world market ,thus have great effect on the exports of
China's nonferrous metals products, especially the exports to East Asia
which is the main exported area of China's processed products of cooper
and aluminium .Facing the depreciation of Japanese yen and Korea yen ,
China's nonferrous metals products are going to be squeezed out from
East Asian market by the Japanese and Korea products. It is predicted
that the exports of China's nonferrous metals products will decrease
obviously and the imports will keep incerasing in 1998.
3.In 1998,the supply situation of raw materials of copper and aluminium
in the world market are not being optimistic, especially of copper
concentrates . And smelting charge has been reduced. Under this
situation , the imports of copper concentrates in China shall be
decreased .
