The Social Rehabilitation Center is an official
representative of OTTO-BOCK from Germany. The
Center deals with the production of arm and leg prostheses
using the technology of OTTO-BOCK. In addition, the
Center distributes breast prostheses from Germany.
Gloria factory (the Center's partner) produces special
lingerie for after-surgery clients.
The Center has applied for a grant (within USAID's program
of Democratic and Social Reforms) for the purchase of
equipment necessary to manufacture silicone prostheses for
after-surgery breasts. According to the Center, there is a
good market for modified silicone prostheses in Ukraine.
USAID has given a positive evaluation of the project on
the manufacture of silicone prostheses in Ukraine and has
agreed to consider the possibility of awarding a grant for
the purchase of U.S.-made equipment.
POST REMARKS
The Center of Social Rehabilitation is a regular client of
the Commercial Service in Kyiv. According to the Center,
there is a very good market for silicone prostheses for women's
breasts. Currently, there is no domestic production of this
product and the cost of imported products is much too high for
local customers. The Center works with local oncology hospitals
and provides consultations with women after their surgery and
offers them prostheses imported from Germany.
The Ministry of Labor and Social Policy of Ukraine has a special
program which finances the supply of prostheses to clients post
surgery. The Center works closely with the Ministry and uses the
Ministry's financial support to pay off its manufacturing
expenses.
Post feels that investment into the development of this business
can be lucrative. If USAID will not award a grant for the
project, U.S. companies may wish to consider the possibility of
establishing a joint venture with the Center. In any case, to
clarify details of this project, interested U.S. companies are
advised to contact the Center and USAID directly.
