Sanming is located in Northwestern Fujian. It's a newly built industry city and one of nationwide and hygiene cities and in 1993 was listed into one of the coastal economic opening zone by the state council with its jurisdiction over nine counties, two districts and one city, a total area of 22,900 km² and a population of 2.647 million. Since the reform and opening up, Sanming has made a great progress in economic construction. In 1998, GNP of sanming reached 22.47 billion yuan and the first industry added value 6.34 billion yuan, the secondary industry added value 8.79 billion yuan, the tertiary industries added value 7.34 billion yuan, the gross output value of township enterprises 18.3 billion yuan, the financial revenue with in the budget 1.75 billion yuan and the total value for foreign trade export 0.144 billion USD.
     Sanming is the Comprehensive Transforming Experimental Zone of the Collective Forest in Southern China for its richful forestry resources with many species of trees. The forest coverage rate is 76.8%, timber reserve 115 million m³, accounting for the one third of the reserve in Fujian, providing 2 million m³ of commodity timber, 20 million pieces of commodity bamboo, 80,000 tons of bamboo shoots and 30,000 tons of resin, therefore it enjoys a good name of Green Treasure-house in Fujian Province.
     Sanming has got it nickname as Mineral Treasure Bowl for its richful mineral resources, 79 kinds of metal and nonmetal minerals have been proven, among which 50 kind of the deposit have been proven. The large reserve include coal, iron, wolfram, aluminium, stannum, manganese, barite, limestone, marble and sapphire. Barite is one of the richful mines in China and wolfram, manganese and sapphire also take an important position in the mineral resources in Fujian, even in China.
     Sanming is rich in water resources with Shaxi, Jinxi, and Youxi as its main rivers, belonging to the Minjiang River, 875 km in total length and the annual total runoff flow rate 22.88 billion m³. The Shaxi River is the largest in Sanming, 320 km in total length, running through seven counties with the total annual runoff flow rate of 11 billion m³, the potential installed capacity is 1.7 million Kw, among which 910,000 kw has been developed.
     Sanming is also rich in tourism resources for its beautiful mountains and rivers and particular scenic spots. The main scenic spots include the Golden Lake in Taining, Yuhua and Jinhua Caves in Jiangle, Taoyuan Cave and Linyin Stone Forest in Yong'an, Dripping Rock in Mingxi, Tianer Cave in Ninghua, Qixian Cave and Taojing Mountain in Shaxian, Huli Cave and Qixing Rock in Qingliu, Geshikao Natural Protection, Longquan Mountain, Ruiyun Cave in the downtown of Sanming and Longxi Mountain in Jiangle, among which Golden Lake in Taining and Stone Forest, Taoyuan Cave is country level scenic beauties. The famous relics include the birth place of zhuxi in Youxi and the Minister House in Ming Dynasty in Taining. The ancient architecture include Anzhen Bao in Yong'an and Shibi Village the originating place of the Hakkas in Ninghua and so on.
     A solid foundation of industry has been laid for Sanming. It is an important base for raw material industry in Fujian Province with a full system of such industries as metallurgy, chemical, coal, machinery, textile, printing and dyeing, plastics, papermaking, forestry, building materials, electronics and medicine. There are 44 large and medium-sized enterprises with the provincial level largest enterprises in such as steel, fertilizer, cement, chemical fibre, pringting and dyeing, coal in Sanming.
     Sanming is also the main base in Fujian for commodity grani. There are 9 commodity grain base counties in provincial level, among which eight counties are state-level, with supply of grain of 170 million Kg in 1998. The native products including lotus seeds in Jianing, Jin mandarin orange and gingko in Youxi, Huanai in Shaxian and ramie in Datian are well known. Ninghua and Qingliu are two largest flue-tobacco producing counties in Fujian Province.
     Sanming enjoys an ideal investment environment, since the reform and opening up, the investment environment are steadily perfected. The railway from Yintan to Xiamen runs through its boundary and the traffic mileage in the boundary reaches 10,000 km. The No.205 National Highway Yong'an-Sanming-Shaxian is connected with the No.316 national highway, 20 ton-container truck may get to Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian and Xiamen Special Economic zone directly, the No.212 Provincial Highway from Sanming to Jiaowei of Xianyou may directly get to Meizhou Bay and Xiamen Port. In this year we plan to build Sanming Section of Jingfu Expressway which will be able to greatly improve the traffic conditions into and out of Sanming. The township above exchange program controlled telephone has been realized with such advanced communication means as IDD, fax, portable phone, radio-paging etc. What's more, the services relating foreign oriented economy such as finance, transport, commodity inspection, customs merchandise sanitary inspection and animals and plants inspection have all been set up. The implementation of the comprehensive development of the Shaxi River in sailing and power will bring it realized for 300 ton-ships from Sanming directly to Fuzhou.
