Biological Protection Zone Be Set Up in NW China
Northwest China's Shaanxi Province is to introduce a state-level biological protection zone at Qinling Mountain.

The protection zone covers 32 counties and six cities and prefectures in Shaanxi with a total area of 51,100 square kilometers, accounting for a quarter of Shaanxi's total territory. The project will take 10 years to complete.

The zone will be divided into four parts which will feature protection of rare animals and plants, water resources, scenic areas and soil erosion control, said Pan Liansheng, the provincial vice-governor, at a recent meeting on ecological protection.

The Qinling Mountain range has played an important part in the formation and evolution of the Chinese mainland. It is not only the natural dividing line between north and south China, but also a region exerting a profound influence on the environmental changes and disasters that occur in China. It is widely known as the "biological gene bank".

However, its environment has deteriorated due to unwise development in recent years.

Establishment of the protection zone will help restore the balance of the ecological system and reduce the incidence of natural disasters in the region, Pan says.
