Nanjing is highly developed in terms of science & technology and education, and possesses many talented scholars and personalities. There are 48 colleges and universities, 508 scientific research institutions, more than 320 thousand scientists, engineers and technicians and over 40 academians of the Chinese Academy of Science. Its scientific and technological strength ranks the third in the country. In 1995, the City's scientific and technological circles achieved 291 major pieces of achievements, those attaining international levels accounting for 6% , and those attaining domestic advanced levels accounting for 42%.
