Activities: Bullfighting, horse races, cockfighting,
sheepfighting, singing contests, beauty contest,
wrestling, local-style dance contest, torch parade and
bonfire party.

2. Horse Race Festival in Qiangtang, Tibet
Dates: The last 10-day period of August (between the end
of the seventh month and the early part of the eighth
month of the Tibetan calendar)
Place: Nagqu Prefecture in Tibet
Activities: Horse races, archery shooting races,
horsemanship performances and material exchange
activities will be held.

3. The Torch Festival of the Yi Minority in Yunnan
Province
Dates: June 24-26
Places: Shicun Town of Lunan Yi Autonomous County and Chuxiong
City of Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province
Activities: Tourists can watch performances of the four-stringed Plucked
instrument with a full-moon-shaped sound box and the reed-pipe wind
instrument, and can try the local dasanxian dance. Other activities, such as
archery, horse races, bullfighting, wrestling and bonfire parties will be held.

4. Tibetan Shoton Festival
Dates: August (from the end of the sixth month
to the early part of the eighth month of the
Tibetan calendar)
Place: Lhasa, Tibet
Activities: The Shoton Festival is also known as
the Yogurt Banquet Festival. During the festival,
religious people will display images of the
Buddha under the sun, traditional Tibetan
operas will be performed and various materials
fairs will be held. Tourists can also visit southern
Tibet.

5. Yueyang International Dragon Boat Festival
Dates: June 10-14
Place: South Lake in Yueyang, Hunan Province
Activities: The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the
fifth lunar month, in commemoration of Qu Yuan, a great poet
of ancient times. During the festival, people throughout the
country hold dragon boat races, eat zongzi (a pyramid-shaped
dumpling made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed
leaves), drink local wines and hang up Artemisia argyi. Over 20
teams from the United States,Canada, Australia and countries
throughout Southeast Asia and other parts of the world
partic1pate in dragon boat races. Dragon boat folk performances
are shown as well.

6. Mt. Wutai International Tourist Month
Dates: July 25-August 25
Place: Taihuai Town, Wutai County, Shanxi Province
Activities: Mt. Wutai is one of four famous Buddhist
mountains in China. Every year in the sixth lunar
month, a mule and horse fair is held here. During the
festival, there are Buddhist activities, folk recreational
activities, and mule and horse exchange fairs.

7. Jiayuguan Pass International Hang
Glider Festival
Dates: July 15-18
Place: Jiayuguan Pass Hang Glide Base, Gansu Province
Activities: Hang glide contests and flight training are
arranged, and silver, gold and diamond flight badges are
offered. Tourists may experience this unique mode of air
travel and enjoy the mystical colors of the vast Gobi
Desert and the splendor of the snow-covered Qilian
Mountains. Tourists may also visit Jiayuguan Pass, the
western end of the Great Wall, Jiuquan and Dunhuang,
home to the greatest collection of Buddhist frescoes in
China.

8. China Changchun International Film
Festival
Dates: August 23-28
Place: Changchun, Jilin Province
Activities: During the festival, domestic and foreign
movie stars put on performances, Chinese and foreign
movies are shovwn and appraised, and "Changchun
Commemorative Cups" are issued. In addition, trade
fairs, exhibitions of high-tech products are held.
Guandong lantern and food festivals are also arranged
and the northeast's unique yangge dance is performed.

9. Qingdao International Beer Festival
Dates: In the second 10-day period of August
Place: Qingdao City, Shandong Province
Activities: Large recreational performances, artistic
tours, fashion shows, ocean-side fireworks, sporting
events, trade fairs and symposiums for the exchange of
brewing technology are to be held.

10. Jiuhua Temple Fair
Dates: The second 10-day period in August (the 30th
day of the seventh lunar month)
Place: Anhui Province
Activities: Religious gatherings and symposiums for
eminent monks are held and light-emitting Buddhist
statues are displayed. In addition, commodity fairs are
arranged.

11. Daxing County Watermelon Festival
Dates: June to July
Place: Daxing County, Beijing
Activities: Tours of watermelon fields and watermelon tasting events
are held. Folk performances are given, and tourists may visit farmers'
homes .

12. China Guizhou Famous Liquor and
Wine Fesdral
Dates: July to August
PIaces: Zunyi City, Maotai Township in Renhuai,
and the Shizhang Caves in Chishui, Guizhou
Province
Activities: An opening ceremony and large
recreational performances will be held. Tourists may
visit the Zunyi Museum of Liquor and Wine and the
Maotai Brewery, home of China's most famous baijiu,
or "white spirit.' Other tourist attractions include the
site of China's historical Zunyi Meeting and the
waterfalls at the Shizhang Caves.

13. Nadam Grassland Tourist Festiva
Dates: July 15-August 30
Place: Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region
Activities: "Nadam" means "games" in Mongolian.
During the festival, tourists may participate in horse
racing, archery, a recreation of an imperial banquet of the
Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), local wedding ceremonies, a
memorial ceremony at the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan,
tours highlighting Mongolian customs and a visit to the
hot spring forest.

14. Xinjiang Grape Festival
Dates: August 20-26
Place: Turpan, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region
Activities: Tourists may attend wedding ceremonies of
the Uygur minority, and attend performances of light-
hearted and graceful locd dances. A hami melon contest is
held, and trade fairs are arranged. In addition, travelers
may visit the grape, melon and fruit streets and see
commercial camel teams traveling Silk Road, as they have
done for 2,000 years.
