The Bird island is located in the northwest of Qinghai Lake, with an area of 800 square meters. Since there lives about 100,000 migratory birds, the island is called "the Kingdom of birds". In April, tens of kinds of migrants such as brown-headed gulls, cormorants, swans, etc. From South China, Southeast Asia and other places come to multiply here. The Bird island is 300 kilometers from Xining, the provincial capital of Qinghai Province.

As it is one of China's six biggest lamaseries of the yellow sect and the birthplace of its founder, Tsong Khapa, the Taer Lamasery is a fine combination of Han and Tibetan architecture covering an area of more than 40 hectares. The original construction began in the Jia Jing period in the 39th year of the Ming Dynasty (1560A.D.) and the lamasery now consists of the Great Temple of Golden Tile, the Lesser Temple of Golden Tile, the Great Meditation Hall, Eight Stupas, the Longevity Temple and the Nine room Hall, to mention a few. The butter sculptures, murals and appliques are known as its unique "three wonders" of art. In the lamasery there are 11 living Buddha and 560 lamas in service there. Special ceremonies take place on January 15th, April 15th, June 7th and November 23rd according to the lunar calendar.
