Snowcapped mountains, white clouds, blue sky, grassland and unique Tibetan
folklore are wonderful charms of Tibet. The Tibetan Folklore Festival
held on Mount Lingshan, 120 kilometers form Beijing proper, provides
a special chance for people to learn about the far-away region.
The main peak of Lingshan Mountain is 2,300 meters above sea level,
the highest in the Beijing area. It has a typical landform of plateau
and gentle slopes. In summer, green meadows with wild flowers cover
the mountain. Low-flying clouds could as if be touched by hand.
It is surprising to see mountain yaks known as the "boat of the
plateau" there. They have been raised in a wild state since the
1970s. People feel as if they were really on the Tibetan young women
from the Central Institute for Nationalities.
You can take buses along the winding mountain highway to the foot of
the main peak and then cable cars along the 1,500-meter-long cableway
for 20 minutes to the summit. On the cable cars, tourist can enjoy themselves
the beauty of scenery. It is an interesting way for tourists to relax
themselves while roaming aimlessly on or galloping over the wide and
soft grassland while smelling fragrant grasses and flowers on horseback.
It is a pleasure for you to rest or have a picnic in the birch forest
in Lingshan Mountain. If you do not bring along enough food, you can
buy a cup of tasteful Tibetan buttered tea, qingke (highland barley)
wine and a piece of roast meat from a whole sheep.
Lingshan's Tibetan Folklore Festival lasts through the whole summer.
It takes three hours to drive westward along Shijingshan Road and Mentougou
Highway to the destination. Individual tourists can take the subway
to the terminal at Pingguoyuan and then change a special tourist bus
leading directly to the mountain. The bus one-way fare is 15 yuan and
the admission fee is 30 yuan, not including the one-way cable fare of
30 yuan.
Advice: The temperature at Lingshan is low after dark, so you should
bring more clothes, and sneakers will be helpful for you to go sightseeing.
In order to protect the grassland, you must not pick flowers and or
litter after picnicking.
