China to Double Its Forest Acreage by 2050

BEIJING, August 27 -- China plans to increase its forest cover rate to 26 percent in five decades, about twice as much as its current forest acreage, the country's top forestry official said.

In a recent speech at a meeting of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), Zhou Shengxian, director of the State Forestry Administration, said the goal was set after in-depth investigations and assessments by the administration.

According to a program mapped out by the administration, the forest coverage in China will reach 19.4 percent by 2010, and 24 percent by 2030, said the director.

The program was design to curb the deterioration of the country's ecological environment, and increase its forest resources for sustainable economic and social development in the country.
