HK to Host 2001 Watch & Clock Fair

HONG KONG, August 28 -- Hong Kong will stage its Watch and Clock fair 2001, the largest specialized trade fair of its kind worldwide, from September 5 to 9 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, organizers of the fair announced here Monday.

The fair, co-organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and several other local watch manufacturers and organizations, will showcase a wide range of innovative timepiece, related parts and components, tools and machinery, said Tommy Y.B. Chan, co-chairman of the Fair Organizing Committee.

The event will feature about 720 exhibitors representing 14 countries and regions, and exhibitors from the Chinese mainland, France, South Korea and Taiwan will set up group pavilions during the fair, according to Chan.

In conjunction with the fair, the Asian Watch Industry Conference will be held at which industry experts from the U.S., Japan and the Chinese mainland will examine the impact of the U.S. economic slowdown on the timepiece market, the retail market in Japan, and the outlook of the mainland's timepiece market after China's accession to the World Trade Organization, organizers said.

Hong Kong is a leading exporter of watches and clocks in the world. According to the latest available statistics, Hong Kong was the world's second largest exporter of complete watches in terms of both value and quantity in 1998. Its exports of complete clocks ranked the largest and second largest in terms of value and quantity respectively.
