Leading Austrian Symphony Orchestra to Perform in Beijing

BEIJING, September 26 -- A leading Austrian symphony orchestra will present 16 Strauss classics October 12 in Beijing to commemorate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Austria.

The performance will be the 10th China tour of the Vienna Strauss Festival Orchestra (VSFO), recognized as the best interpreter of Strauss compositions worldwide.

The orchestra, commissioned by the Mayor of Vienna, has visited nine Chinese cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou since 1993.

Austrian President Dr. Thomas Klestil and Vienna Mayor Michael Haupl have sent messages of congratulation to the orchestra's upcoming Beijing performance.

The orchestra's Beijing appearance will be led by renowned Austrian conductor Peter Guth, founder of the VSFO as well as former chief conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.

The VSFO's Beijing performance will include compositions such as "the Blue Danube" and "Tales From the Vienna Woods."

In the past 20 years, music exchanges between China and Austria have become increasingly frequent. In 1973, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra made its debut in China with western classical music.

Meanwhile, more Austrians are drawn to the annual Chinese Spring Festival Concert staged in Vienna.
