I have never felt safer. While by Chinese friends are security minded, mostly because of the stories they have heard of crime in
America. I never had any worries about things being stolen or my personal safety, even though I seldom saw the police. There is more individual freedom and fewer police
here than any other place I have been. Further, my Chinese friends didn't know of any significant problems. This is especially true in Dali, Jinghong and Lijiang, where the
Bai, Dai and Naxi live. These "nationalities" are noted for their honesty and friendliness.
